Agates are made of quartz crystals too small to be seen with the naked eye. Montana named the Montana agate and Yogo sapphire its state gemstones in 1969, thanks to the efforts of Montana’s Council of Rock and Mineral Clubs. Montana agates are most abundant along the Yellowstone River.
